  4.                    Introduction
  5.  
  6. WPWINF.EXE is a little Visual Basic Project designed to facilitate
  7. your use of WordPerfect for Windows. All rights to WPWINF are reserved by 
  8. PCTA, but you may copy and use release 1.0 of WPWINF, as you wish, 
  9. provided no charges above $5.00 (U.S. Dollars) are made for the media 
  10. containing it (e.g., disks, BBS usage and/or download charges, etc.).

  12. The problems WPWINF addresses are: 
  13.  
  14. * WPWIN usually takes a long time to initialize, even if you enter it by mistake.. 
  15.  
  16. * WPWIN file management can be cryptic and slow. 
  17.  
  18. * Sometimes WPWIN  gives a cryptic error message when you attempt to start it from 
  19.   the Windows Program manager, and it is already running.
  20.  
  21. WPWINF can be used as a miniature file manager for WPWIN. If you create an
  22. icon for it with a startup directory, then it will speed editing files in that 
  23. directory. 
  24.  
  25. WPWINF increases user productivity by faciliating users leaving WPWIN up
  26. and loading files into it as needed. This eliminates WPWIN's long initialization 
  27. time.
  28.  
  29. In addition, WPWINF is a useful addition to Central Point PC Tools
  30. for Window's File Manager. If you assign WPWINF to its button bar,
  31. you can select a file and click that button, and be sure that the right
  32. thing will happen.

  34. Other file managers with similar facilities to PC Tools will also benefit from
  35. the use of WPWINF.
  36.  
  37.                What WPWINF 1.1 Does
  38.  
  39. WPWINF checks to see if WPWIN is started, and verifies the parameters
  40. you have provided it with. You will be given the chance to select a file or 
  41. change your selection. If WPWIN is already started, WPWINF will add 
  42. the file you have selected to WPWIN's multiple document interface (MDI). 
  43. If WPWIN is not already started. WPWINF starts it with the file you specify.
  44.  
  45. If WPWIN is not already started, and a file is specified, then WPWIN starts 
  46. with its defaults. If WPWIN is already started, and no file is specified, an 
  47. informative message is put on the screen. WPWINF ends once WPWIN commences
  48. loading or starts to add the specified file to its MDI interface.

  50. WPWINF is a small Visual Basic 2.0 project, and most of the resources it uses
  51. are a consequence of using Visual Basic. Visual Basic 2.0 applications
  52. use no less than 75 kilobytes and 5% Free System Resources.

  55.                               INSTALLATION
  56.  
  57. There are two major steps to installing WPWINF in Windows:
  58.  
  59. (1) Installing WPWINF program files
  60.  
  61. (2) Installing WPWINF in the Windows Program Manager
  62.  
  63.  
  64. Installing WPWINF Program Files
  65.  
  66. WPWINF.EXE is as completely self-contained as any Visual Basic 2.0 Project.
  67. In other words, if you have not already done so, you should obtain 
  68. VBRUN200.DLL, and copy it to the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM subdirectory. 
  69. VBRUN200.DLL  may be freely copied, and is probably available 
  70. from the same source as you obtained WPWINF. WPWINF is not distributed with 
  71. VBRUN200.DLL because VBRUN200.DLL is so freely available, and is reasonably 
  72. large (>200 kilobytes). WPWINF is about 10 times smaller.

  74. You need to copy WPWINF.EXE and WPWINF.HLP some place where Windows can readily 
  75. find it, such as the \WPWIN subdirectory.

  77. Installing WPWINF in the Program Manager
  78.  
  79. Install WPWINF in Program Manager using the File, New, Program Item
  80. menu selections to get to the Program Item Properties menu. If you are
  81. familiar with the procedure, skip reading the rest of this item and just
  82. do it.

  84. * First, select the program group (such as WordPerfect Applications) you want to have the
  85.   WPWINF icon in. Single click any item in the group. It will be highlighted.
  86.  
  87. * Second, select File, New, and Program Item. 
  88.  
  89. * Third, use the Browse Button on the Program Item Properties menu to find  
  90.   where you copied WPWINF.EXE. 
  91.  
  92. * Finally, use the OK Button to confirm creation of the WPWINF icon.

  94.                Using WPWINF in Windows
  95.  
  96. What happens when you start WPWINF:
  97.  
  98. WPWINF presents you with a menu of 4 options:
  99.  
  100. * Open - this option asks WPWIN to open the file you specify. If there is
  101.   no file, and WPWIN is already running, WPWINF tells you so, and ends.
  102.  
  103. * Print - this option asks WPWIN to print the file you specify. If WPWIN is 
  104.   not running it starts WPWIN and asks it to load the file, but printing
  105.   it is up to you.
  106.  
  107. * Select File - this option brings up WPWINF's file selection menu. Where the
  108.   file selection starts depends on the Working Directory you have specified
  109.   to the Program Manager if no file has been specified. If you fully specify 
  110.   the drive and path when you start WPWINF, then that is used. WPWINF's
  111.   File, Open menu leads to this same menu.

  113. * Exit - this ends WPWINF with no further actions being taken. WPWINF's 
  114.   File, Exit menu options have the same consequence.

  117. Installing WPWINF in the PC Tools for Windows File Manager.

  119. There are two major steps to installing WPWINF in 
  120. the PC Tools for Windows File Manager, beyond copying the
  121. WPWINF.EXE file to your disk:

  123. (1) Creating a Toolbar command
  124.  
  125. (2) Assigning the command to the Toolbar

  153. * WPWINF contains an appropriate icon
  154.  
  155. Assigning the WPWINF command to the Toolbar:
  156.  
  157. * Select Options, Customize
  158.  
  159. * Press the Toolbar button 
  160.  
  161. * Use the Toolbar scroll bar to the place in the toolbar to add WPWINF
  162.  
  163. * Select WPWINF from the Commands menu
  164.  
  165. * Press the Insert button
  166.  
  167. * Press the Save button

  170. WPWINF.INI file
  171.  
  172. If you put a file called WPWINF.INI in Window's startup directory
  173. (usually C:\WINDOWS) then this file will override some defaults
  174. that are used to start WPWIN. This file is composed of 
  175. 1 record. The record contains two items separated by a comma:
  176.  
  177. * The first item is used to start WPWIN and defaults to WPWIN.EXE.
  178.  
  179. * The second item is any optional WPWIN parameters you wish to use,
  180.   such as the /U parameter for network users. 
  181.  
  182. If either parameter is null, then WPWINF's defaults will be used instead.

  184.                     CAVEATS
  185.  
  186. This is release 1.0 of WPWINF, and you may find some bugs or things
  187. you don't like about how it works. The author reserves its copyright,
  188. but is letting people use and copy release 1.0 subject to the conditions
  189. mentioned at the top of this file. For further information contact the author

  193.                     VBRLOAD.EXE
  194.  
  195. VBRLOAD.EXE is included with WPWINF. It is a trivial application that
  196. causes much of VBRUN200.DLL to be resident as long as it is resident. 
  197. You may want to put it in your startup group to speed subsequent loading 
  198. of Visual Basic 2.0 applications. If you do this, remember to select the 
  199. Run Minimized option.

  201. VBRLOAD uses about 5% FSR's and 75k of Windows memory. If you run low,
  202. ending it will recover 100% of these resources.
